Drama & The Performing Arts

Drama is used throughout the school as an integral part of curriculum teaching as well as a specialist subject in its own right. It is seen as an important tool in fostering understanding, confidence and communication skills. All children are encouraged to participate in dramatic activities from informal assemblies through to Lower and Upper School productions. There is a Drama Club for children in Year 2, and an opportunity to enter the local Godalming Festival. All Upper School pupils have Drama lessons and can attend Drama Clubs. In the Spring Term all children in Year 3 perform a full-scale production which involves the collaboration of the Music, Drama and Dance departments. The highlight of the summer term is a School Production featuring all children in Year 6 and involving pupils from further down the school.

Speech and Drama is offered as an optional extra and taught in small groups by a specialist teacher. Children who study this may take regular London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) examinations and perform at the local Godalming Festival, among a host of other opportunities. The lessons are aimed equally at the shy or extravert child. They build individual's confidence and teach crucial speaking skills. This is a popular subject and excellent results are achieved.

Facilities include: a dedicated Performing Arts Room for Speech and Drama, a large hall for Class Drama and a well-equipped stage and lighting rig for productions.
