Learning Support

At St Hilary's, the Learning Support team works closely with teaching staff to put together Individual Support Plans (ISP) for pupils who have learning difficulties, to enable them to fully access the curriculum and achieve their learning targets.

Early recognition of difficulties is important to ensure the children retain and increase their self-esteem and confidence.  To this end, the school offers parents the opportunity to have their children take part in a dyslexia screening programme: PREST screening is offered in the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), DEST -2 in Pre-Prep and a Dyslexia Screener is available for pupils in Years 3 to 6. The results are used to direct the support required including support from other professionals.

Communication with parents is also an integral part of Learning Support and if parents have any concerns about their children, they are encouraged to make an appointment with the school to discuss them.  In addition, parents of children who have an ISP have half termly review meetings with the EYFS SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) or termly meetings with the Pre-Prep and Prep SENCO.

In Pre-Prep and Prep, the Learning Support staff provide individually tailored one to one lessons to give the pupils at St Hilary's every opportunity to achieve their full academic potential.  Learning Support lessons do not incur any extra charges. The lessons are 30 minutes in duration and take place during the school day but not during core subject teaching.
